Steps in the Research Process

Research is a process, and the MLK Jr. Library is your partner in this journey. The steps below are meant to provide you with a working outline for your research assignments and projects. Note that the research process is not always linear, and your needs will vary depending on your class or assignment requirements. As always, you can Contact Us for research questions and support!

Step 1 - Choose a Research Topic

Your topic should be narrow enough to be clear to your audience, but broad enough that you are able to find relevant information.

Step 2 - Find Background Information

Use the encyclopedias below to get a general overview and familiarize yourself with your topic. This information can help you gather important facts and reveal additional keywords and sources on your topic.

Step 3 - Find Articles, Books and eBooks

Search for articles, books or eBook for in-depth information on your chosen topic.

Step 4 - Evaluate Your Information

Make sure the information you have now gathered is reliable and fulfills the requirements of your assignment. Learn what type of sources are available and how to evaluate them.

Step 5 - Cite Your Sources

Give credit where it's due and cite the sources that helped craft your assignment.
