The Dewey Decimal Classification—conceived by Melvil Dewey in 1873 and first published in 1876—is an organization tool that is continuously revised to keep pace with current knowledge.
At LACC's Martin Luther King Library, the numbers to keep in mind for literature are the 800s. The Fiction Collection is organized by authors' last name in alphabetical order and is located on the second floor of the Library.
For Works by or about an individual author, the citation order is to first class together all the works by or about an author, then secondly to subdivide by the Book Number Scheme. The first component of the call number is accomplished using an abbreviated or modified Dewey class number and an author cutter number. This is followed by the locally devised UIUC book number.
